# Trek Adventure FAQ

> Answers to common questions from teachers, school leaders, parents, and students.

## Getting started

> [accordion] What is Trek Adventure?
>
> Trek Adventure is a reading tool inside Trek Learning. Students read choose-your-own-adventure stories that Trek writes for them. The stories match their reading level and can include your vocabulary words and topics. Students make choices that change the story, and short quizzes check their understanding along the way.

> [accordion] Who can use it?
>
> Trek Adventure is included with every Trek Learning plan. Teachers turn it on for their classes, and students read inside Trek Learning. Reading levels go from Kindergarten to Grade 10.

> [accordion] I don't see Trek Adventure in my menu. Why?
>
> Trek Adventure is included with every Trek Learning plan. If you're a teacher and you don't see **Trek Adventure** in your left menu, email [help@trekai.org](mailto:help@trekai.org) or contact your Partner Success Team.
>
> If you're a student, your teacher needs to turn it on for your class first.

> [accordion] Do I need to assign stories?
>
> No. Once you turn on Trek Adventure for a class, every student in it can start reading. There are no assignments or due dates to manage.

> [accordion] How long does setup take?
>
> About two minutes per class. See [Set up Trek Adventure for your class](https://support.trekai.app/trek-adventure/set-up-for-your-class.md).

## Reading levels and content

> [accordion] How does Trek know each student's reading level?
>
> You set a starting level and difficulty for the class when you turn on Trek Adventure. Over time, Trek adjusts the level based on how each student does on quizzes. It doesn't change after one bad quiz. It looks at a pattern.

> [accordion] Can students change their own reading level?
>
> Yes. Students can change their grade level in **Settings**, under **My Grade**. You can see each student's current level on the Trek Adventure page.

> [accordion] Can I connect stories to what I'm teaching?
>
> Yes, in three ways:
>
> * Add **vocabulary words**, such as this week's spelling list.
> * Add **grammar concepts** you want students to practice.
> * Switch to **Custom** reading mode and write a topic prompt, like "Make the story about how photosynthesis works."

> [accordion] Can I upload my own files or readings?
>
> Not yet. Today, you shape stories with vocabulary, grammar, genres, and custom topic prompts.

> [accordion] What languages are available?
>
> Stories can be written in English and several world languages. Pick the language when you set up a class. Need one that isn't listed? Email [help@trekai.org](mailto:help@trekai.org). We add languages for schools often.

> [accordion] Can students reread a finished book?
>
> Students can page back through the current story at any time. When a story ends, they can continue the adventure with the same characters, or start a new story. Teachers can read every story in a student's **Story History**.

## Safety and privacy

> [accordion] Are the stories safe for kids?
>
> Yes. Stories are written for school and never include romance or violence. Teachers can also turn off any genre, for example spooky stories.

> [accordion] Can students talk to anyone in Trek Adventure?
>
> No. Trek Adventure has no chat or messaging between students.

> [accordion] Who can see my child's reading?
>
> Their teacher can see the books they read, their quiz scores, and their reading level. Classmates only see the top five names on the class leaderboard, and teachers can turn the leaderboard off.

## Quizzes and the leaderboard

> [accordion] How do quizzes work?
>
> Every few pages, the story pauses for a short comprehension quiz. Teachers choose how often quizzes appear and how many questions they have. After each quiz, students see the correct answers and go right back to reading.

> [accordion] Why is there a timer on each page?
>
> The timer gives students enough time to read the page before they move on. It helps stop them from clicking through without reading.

> [accordion] How does the leaderboard work?
>
> Students earn points from quizzes. The leaderboard only shows the top five readers. Students outside the top five never see their rank. They only see how many points they need to move up. Teachers can hide the leaderboard in **Class Settings**.

## Accessibility

> [accordion] Can stories be read aloud?
>
> Yes. Students can click play on any page to hear it read aloud, then pause or replay.

> [accordion] Is there support for students with dyslexia?
>
> Yes. Students can turn on dyslexia-friendly fonts in **Settings**. Teachers can turn them on for the whole class in **Class Settings**.

## The family app

> [accordion] Is there a Trek Adventure app?
>
> Yes. TrekAdventure is a family app for [iPhone and iPad](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/trekadventure/id6761840467) and [Android](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.trekadventure.app). Parents set up a profile for each child and choose their reading level, story language, and the values they want stories to show, like kindness or perseverance.

> [accordion] Can my child use their school login in the app?
>
> Not at this time. The family app uses its own parent account. Stories read in the app stay separate from your child's school account and don't appear in teacher reports.

> [accordion] Does the app cost money?
>
> The app is free to download and includes free reading every day. Optional paid plans add more reading and more child profiles. Prices are shown in the App Store and Google Play.
